The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) says the Dangote Petroleum Refinery purchased 98% of the crude oil offered to domestic refineries during the second quarter of 2026, underscoring its dominant position in Nigeria’s refining sector.

According to the commission, the 650,000-barrel-per-day refinery accounted for nearly all crude allocated under the country’s domestic crude supply framework, with the remaining volumes shared among smaller local refineries.

NUPRC said the figures reflect the scale of Dangote Refinery’s operations and its growing role in absorbing domestically produced crude as Nigeria works to reduce dependence on imported refined petroleum products.

The regulator noted that the domestic crude supply obligation was introduced to ensure local refineries have reliable access to feedstock, boost refining capacity and strengthen the country’s energy security.

Industry analysts say Dangote’s overwhelming share of domestic crude allocations highlights both its operational capacity and the relatively limited processing capabilities of other local refineries, many of which are still ramping up production.

The refinery has steadily increased output in recent months, producing petrol, diesel, aviation fuel and other petroleum products for both the Nigerian market and exports to other African countries.

NUPRC reiterated its commitment to implementing the domestic crude supply policy transparently, adding that crude allocations are based on refinery demand, processing capacity and compliance with regulatory requirements.

The commission said it will continue working with producers and refiners to ensure sufficient crude supply for domestic processing while maintaining Nigeria’s export commitments.

The latest figures reinforce Dangote Refinery’s central role in Nigeria’s downstream oil sector as the country seeks to expand local refining, reduce fuel imports and improve the value derived from its crude oil resources.
