Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has spoken publicly on the killing of a leader of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in Benue State, calling for calm and a thorough investigation as police intensify efforts to bring those responsible to justice.
The SGF condemned the killing, describing it as a tragic development that threatens peace and stability in a state already grappling with recurring communal and security challenges. He urged residents to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and instead allow security agencies to carry out their investigations.
Akume reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to restoring peace in Benue and other parts of the country affected by violent clashes and criminal activities. He said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration remains focused on strengthening security operations and promoting dialogue among communities to prevent further violence.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police Force confirmed the arrest of 10 suspects in connection with the killing. According to police authorities, the arrests followed intelligence-led operations conducted in affected communities, with investigators working to establish the roles played by each suspect in the incident.
Police officials stated that the suspects are currently in custody and will be charged to court if sufficient evidence is obtained. They also assured the public that investigations remain ongoing and that additional arrests could follow as more information becomes available.
The killing has heightened tensions in parts of Benue State, where clashes involving farmers, herders, and armed groups have claimed numerous lives over the years. Community leaders have appealed for restraint, warning that reprisals could further worsen the security situation.
MACBAN officials have condemned the attack on their member and called on authorities to ensure that those responsible are prosecuted. The association also appealed to its members to remain peaceful and cooperate with law enforcement agencies throughout the investigation.
Security analysts say the swift arrest of suspects could help reduce tensions if the investigation is conducted transparently and justice is seen to be served. They also stressed the importance of addressing the underlying causes of recurring violence through improved security, dialogue, and conflict resolution initiatives.
As investigations continue, residents of Benue and other stakeholders will be watching closely for further developments. The Federal Government and security agencies have reiterated their resolve to ensure accountability while working to restore peace and prevent further outbreaks of violence in the state.
