Ukraine is seeking approval from Elon Musk’s SpaceX to use Starlink-connected drones in operations targeting ballistic missile launchers inside Russia, according to officials familiar with the discussions.
The request reportedly forms part of Kyiv’s broader effort to strengthen its ability to detect and strike mobile missile launchers before they can be used in attacks on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.
Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite internet network, has played a critical role in Ukraine’s communications since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, providing connectivity for military units, emergency services and civilian infrastructure. However, the use of the system for offensive military operations has remained a sensitive issue.
According to reports, Ukrainian officials are seeking authorization for expanded operational use of Starlink-enabled drone systems in long-range missions beyond Ukraine’s borders. No decision has been publicly announced by SpaceX.
SpaceX has previously stated that Starlink was intended primarily to support Ukraine’s communications and defensive needs, and the company has imposed restrictions on certain military uses of the network.
Neither SpaceX nor Elon Musk had publicly confirmed the reported request at the time of reporting.
The development comes as Ukraine continues to expand its long-range drone capabilities in an effort to disrupt Russian military infrastructure, including air bases, logistics hubs and missile launch sites used in attacks on Ukrainian territory.
Analysts say any decision by SpaceX could have significant implications for the conflict, given Starlink’s importance to Ukraine’s battlefield communications and the increasing role of drones in modern warfare.
The reported request also highlights the growing influence of commercial technology companies in armed conflicts, where privately operated satellite networks have become integral to military communications and operational planning.
