President Bola Tinubu has joined a request to delay proceedings in a U.S. court case seeking the release of FBI and DEA records linked to him, with a hearing on the application scheduled for August 21.
The case, before the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, stems from Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests seeking records from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) relating to Tinubu.
Court filings show that Tinubu has joined efforts to postpone further proceedings while legal issues surrounding the disclosure of the records are considered. The court will decide at the August 21 hearing whether to grant the delay request or allow the case to proceed.
The lawsuit has attracted significant public and political attention in Nigeria because it concerns the potential release of U.S. law enforcement documents. The case does not involve criminal charges against the Nigerian president.
Neither Tinubu’s legal team nor the plaintiffs had issued detailed public comments beyond the court filings at the time of reporting.
The court’s ruling on August 21 is expected to determine the next steps and timeline for the FOIA case.
