The incident comes as commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has dropped sharply following weeks of heightened military tensions involving the United States and Iran. No group has claimed responsibility for the explosion, and Omani authorities have not indicated whether foul play is suspected. Officials said investigators are examining all possibilities, including an onboard mechanical failure, an external attack or the detonation of an explosive device.
The incident underscores the fragile security environment in the Gulf, where recent military confrontations and threats to commercial shipping have disrupted global supply chains and contributed to volatility in oil prices.
