Ademola Lookman to leave Atalanta, joins Atlético Madrid

The Nigerian superstar and reigning African Footballer of the Year, Ademola Lookman, has accepted an offer to join Atlético Madrid, turning down a lucrative salary proposal from Turkish Super Lig giants Fenerbahçe.

The move brings an end to a difficult 18-month period for the 28-year-old forward, who had been eager to secure a transfer away from Atalanta. Lookman had reportedly pushed for a move to either Paris Saint-Germain or Arsenal, but neither transfer materialised.

Atlético Madrid confirmed in a statement that Lookman has already arrived in the Spanish capital, where he will undergo a medical examination and finalise the terms of his contract ahead of an official announcement.

With the switch to La Liga, Lookman becomes the fourth Super Eagles player currently featuring in Spain’s top flight, following in the footsteps of Akor Adams, Chidera Ejuke and Sadiq Umar.
