Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has been declared the winner of the country’s presidential election, securing about 60% of the vote to earn a second term in office.

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) announced the official results after the completion of vote counting, confirming Hichilema’s victory over his main challengers following a closely watched nationwide poll.

Hichilema thanked Zambians for renewing his mandate and pledged to continue implementing economic reforms, creating jobs and improving public services during his second term.

The election attracted millions of voters and was closely monitored by domestic and international observer missions, including representatives from the African Union (AU), the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the Commonwealth.

The campaign was dominated by issues including the cost of living, economic recovery, debt restructuring, unemployment and agricultural development. Hichilema argued that his administration had stabilized the economy and laid the foundation for long-term growth, while opposition candidates called for faster improvements in living standards.

The Electoral Commission described the voting process as peaceful across most parts of the country, although isolated logistical challenges and minor incidents were reported during polling.

Regional leaders and international partners have begun congratulating Hichilema on his re-election, expressing hope for continued democratic stability and economic progress in Zambia.

Analysts say the president’s victory gives his administration a renewed mandate to advance ongoing reforms, including attracting investment, expanding infrastructure and completing fiscal restructuring efforts after years of economic strain.

Attention will now turn to the formation of Hichilema’s new administration and the implementation of campaign promises as Zambia seeks to sustain economic growth and strengthen public confidence during his second term.
