At least 27 people have been reported killed in separate attacks on communities in Benue and Plateau states, adding to the growing concerns over insecurity in Nigeria’s North-Central region.
According to local reports, armed assailants stormed several communities, attacking residents and setting properties ablaze. The attacks have displaced many families, while security agencies have reportedly been deployed to the affected areas to restore calm and prevent further violence.
In Benue State, residents described the assault as sudden and devastating, with several homes destroyed and many victims caught off guard. Similar scenes were reported in Plateau State, where communities have continued to experience recurring violence despite ongoing security operations.
Reacting to the latest killings, former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, expressed deep concern over the continued loss of lives across the country. In a message directed to President Bola Tinubu, Obi called for urgent and decisive action to address the worsening security situation.
He stressed that the protection of lives and property remains the primary responsibility of government, urging the federal authorities to strengthen security measures and ensure that those responsible for the attacks are brought to justice.
Obi also extended his condolences to the families of the victims and the affected communities, describing the persistent violence as unacceptable and calling for a coordinated national response to end the cycle of bloodshed.
The latest attacks come amid renewed calls from stakeholders, community leaders, and civil society groups for improved intelligence gathering, stronger security presence in vulnerable communities, and long-term solutions to the recurring conflicts affecting parts of Benue and Plateau States.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities had yet to release an official casualty figure, while investigations and security operations remain ongoing.
